How Much Does Website Development Cost in India? A Practical Breakdown
What actually drives the price of a business website in India, what my own projects cost, and the running costs people forget to budget for.
A business website in India can cost anything from a few thousand rupees for a template to several lakh for a custom platform. The price depends mainly on the number of pages, how much is custom-built, who writes the content, and what the site has to connect to. For reference, my own focused Website Sprint (up to about five pages) costs ₹15,000 – ₹25,000.
Here is what moves the number, so you can compare quotes on a like-for-like basis.
What I charge, as a reference point
These are the prices published on this site, so you can see real numbers rather than vague ranges:
| Work | Price | Typical timeline |
|---|---|---|
| Digital Growth Audit (review of an existing site and marketing) | ₹1,499 | A few working days |
| Strategy call | ₹2,500 | One session |
| Website Sprint (up to about five pages) | ₹15,000 – ₹25,000 | One to three weeks |
| Larger projects (websites, automation, software) | ₹15,000 – ₹75,000, quoted per scope | Automation and software: two to eight weeks, in milestones |
Every project gets a written quote before work starts. See the website development service for what is included.
The six things that decide the price
1. Number and type of pages
A five-page brochure site (home, about, services, portfolio, contact) is a very different job from a 40-page site with service pages for every offer. Count the unique page designs, not just the total pages: ten blog posts share one template, but a pricing page, a booking flow and a case-study layout each need their own.
2. Template or custom build
A template is quicker and cheaper, but you inherit its structure, its speed and its limits. A custom build is planned around your offer and your buyer, which matters most when the website's job is to generate enquiries.
3. Content and copywriting
Content is the most underestimated part of a website project. Someone has to write the headline, the service descriptions and the answers to your customers' questions. If you supply finished copy, the project is faster. If the developer writes or restructures it, budget for that time.
4. Features and integrations
Each of these adds work: enquiry forms that send to email or a CRM, WhatsApp buttons, booking, online payments, a blog you can edit yourself, multiple languages, or a members area. Integrations with your existing tools (CRM, Google Sheets, payment gateways) depend on how well those tools are documented.
5. SEO and analytics foundations
A website nobody can find is an expensive brochure. A proper build includes page titles and descriptions, a sitemap, structured data, fast loading on mobile and analytics with conversion tracking from day one. These cost little to include at the start and a lot more to add later. If you want to understand where search is heading, read What Is Answer Engine Optimization?.
6. Who builds it
A freelancer, a small studio and a large agency will quote very differently for similar work. The difference is usually in process, project management and the size of the team, not just the code. Ask each one exactly who will work on your project.
Running costs people forget
The build is a one-time cost. These come every year or every month:
- Domain name: renewed every year.
- Hosting: from free tiers for simple static sites to monthly plans for sites with databases and heavy traffic.
- Business email: usually charged per user, per month.
- Paid tools and plugins: booking, forms, CRMs or premium themes.
- Maintenance and updates: security updates, content changes and small fixes.
- Marketing: the website brings in enquiries only if people reach it, through search, social media or ads.
Ask for these to be listed separately in any quote so the total cost of ownership is clear.
How to get an accurate quote
Before you contact anyone, write down:
- What the website must achieve, e.g. "enquiries for our three services".
- The pages you need, and any you have seen elsewhere and liked.
- Who will provide the text and photos.
- Every feature and integration you need: forms, WhatsApp, payments, booking, blog.
- Your timeline and budget range.
With that list, quotes become comparable, and you'll spot the ones that leave out content, SEO or analytics.
Questions people ask
Is a cheap website a bad idea? Not always. A simple, fast site with clear messaging can work well. It becomes expensive when it doesn't generate enquiries, can't be edited, or has to be rebuilt within a year.
How long does a business website take? A focused site of around five pages usually takes one to three weeks, mostly depending on how quickly content and feedback arrive.
Can I update the website myself? It can be built with an editable content setup so you can change text, images and blog posts without code. Agree this at the start, because it affects how the site is built.
